The Art of Simply Being You

When was the last time you gave yourself quality time to simply be yourself?

When was the last time you truly nurtured yourself — giving yourself permission to slow down, eat nourishing food, sleep well, meditate, journal, breathe and simply be?

We are going through rapid changes right now, both individually and collectively. So much is happening in the world around us, and sometimes it can feel as though the outside world is becoming increasingly noisy, uncertain and overwhelming.

And perhaps the crazier things become on the outside, the more important it is for us to find peace, tranquillity and love on the inside.

The more time you give yourself to simply sit with yourself, the more you begin to understand your own needs. You begin to hear your own truth. You begin to recognise what feels right for you — and perhaps, just as importantly, what no longer does.

Sometimes we don’t need to find all the answers.

Sometimes we simply need to be.

Meditation doesn’t have to mean sitting perfectly still with an empty mind. You don’t have to try to escape your thoughts or become somebody different.

Meditation can be as simple as sitting in a garden and looking at a flower.

It can be staring into the flame of a candle.

It can be sitting quietly with your eyes closed and noticing your breath.

It isn’t necessarily about getting out of your mind.

It can be about coming home to your heart.

When you find something that makes you feel centred, safe and secure, allow yourself to stay there for a while. Give yourself permission to experience that feeling.

Because when we create that peaceful space within ourselves, it begins to emanate outwards. We change the energy we carry into the world, the way we experience our surroundings and, ultimately, the way we move through our lives.

The more we nourish ourselves with healthy food, hydrate our bodies, rest and give ourselves moments of stillness, the more we can begin to notice a difference in how we feel.

And when we feel differently, the world around us can begin to look different too.

Giving ourselves permission to change

I believe we are moving through a profound period of change. Many of us are being invited to step into a different way of being — to reconnect with ourselves and remember the light that has always been within us.

Perhaps this is why so many people seem to be experiencing grief right now.

Recently, I have come across many people experiencing deep grief — sometimes from a loss that happened only weeks or months ago, but sometimes from a loss that happened years, or even decades, ago.

And sometimes the grief isn’t only about losing another person.

Sometimes we grieve the person we used to be.

We can grieve an old identity, an old relationship, an old version of ourselves or a life that no longer fits.

Perhaps we’ve spent years pushing down our own light to remain within a reality that once felt safe or familiar.

And then something changes.

We realise we cannot continue being who we were simply because that is who we have always been.

We are changing.

From caterpillar to butterfly

Sometimes we have to stop trying to remain the caterpillar.

The caterpillar has its own beauty. It has its own purpose. But eventually, it has to surrender to transformation.

And when the butterfly emerges, it cannot go back to being the caterpillar.

Perhaps we can mourn the caterpillar for a while.

Perhaps we can feel sadness for the life we are leaving behind.

That is okay.

Grief is not necessarily a sign that we are making the wrong choice. Sometimes grief is simply evidence that something mattered.

But eventually, there comes a moment when we have to spread our wings.

The butterfly came here to be free.

And perhaps you did too.

You came here to become the greatest version of yourself — to expand, to grow, to experience love, peace, joy and abundance.

So perhaps, today, you can give yourself permission to simply be you.

Put down the expectations.

Quiet the outside noise.

Sit with yourself.

Listen to your heart.

Nourish your body.

Rest.

Breathe.

Meditate.

And remember that you don’t have to have everything figured out.

You are allowed to change.

You are allowed to grow.

You are allowed to grieve what you are leaving behind.

And you are allowed to step into the beautiful, expanded version of yourself that is waiting to emerge.

You are not losing yourself.

You are coming home to yourself.

And perhaps, just perhaps, your wings are already beginning to open.
